JOB SUMMARY
SCOPE OF WORK: The Tribal Paralegal will provide support to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of legal services to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. SUPERVISION: The Tribal Paralegal will report to the Tribal In-House Attorney who will provide direction on departmental priorities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Organize and maintain records of (closed and pending) legal matters in hard copy and electronic records systems. 2. Assist with preparation for court proceedings at the trial and appellate level by organizing exhibits such as affidavits, briefs and pleadings. 3. Communicate with clients and other professionals to discuss details of legal matters. 4. File pleadings with court clerk and maintain calendar of court dates. 5. Assist with research by reviewing statutes, court decisions and legal articles. 6. Direct and coordinate office activity. 7. Maintain budget and cuff accounts, track expenditures and prepare purchase orders. 8. Prepare timesheets, travel authorizations, mileage claims and expense reports. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Two year degree in Paralegal Studies, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Management or related field with one year of experience in legal or court matters. 2. Strong computer skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite particularly in Word and EXCEL programs. 3. Proficient in carrying out general office duties such as filing, typing and transcribing with efficient office equipment (copy, fax, printers and telephone) operation. 4. Understand and carry out both verbal and written instructions and request clarification when needed. 5. Strong work ethic and organizational skills with special attention to detail and ability to operate under pressure. 6. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and professionalism; maintain tact, courtesy, composure and flexibility when dealing with a variety of personalities. 7. Meet the required background check; as an adult never convicted of a felony. 8. Valid driver’s license.
