JOB SUMMARY
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Supervises the prosecution of adult criminal cases under the Gila River Indian Community Code. Supervises, prioritizes, and evaluates the work of professional staff as well as provides leadership and direction. Plans, organizes, directs and implements prosecution activities as well as administrative functions of the Office of the Prosecutor. Prepares standards and procedures for and coordinates the work of professional and administrative support staff. Assigns Prosecutors to case preparation, trial work, legal research and analysis, and other special projects based on their backgrounds and expertise. Assist Prosecutors with cases that are unusual, especially difficult or of a sensitive nature. Will engage in regular and sustained discussions with the US Attorney regarding GRIC cases submitted for federal action, which may include obtaining Special Assistant US Attorney (SAUSA) certification in order to assist with the prosecution of GRIC cases in federal court. Analyze evidence. Investigate, prepare, and prosecute criminal cases in the GRIC Community Court. Tries criminal cases by or against the Community in Community Court. Assist, prepare documentation and coordinate with various County Attorney offices in order to assist the Gila River Police Department with extradition matters. Confer with defense attorneys and/or witnesses and negotiate agreements when it is in the best interest of the Community. Interview Police Officers or others presenting evidence for the Community to ascertain that the evidence is complete and will be presented. Develops and maintains appropriate educational and outreach programs related to the function of the Office of the Prosecutor. Participates in Community workgroups, task forces and other response teams as directed by the Community Council or Governor. Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Chief Prosecutor provides leadership to the Office of the Prosecutor at the Gila River Indian Community. This position is expected to have outstanding criminal prosecution skills as well as abilities in legal office management and administration in leading a ten-attorney office with responsibilities under the Gila River Indian Community Code in adult criminal prosecution. This is a term contract position.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Graduate from an accredited law school with a juris doctor degree; member of the State Bar of Arizona or able to become admitted in Arizona through reciprocity (subject to a conditional hire). Minimum of eight years as a licensed attorney, including at least four years of experience in prosecuting felony-level criminal cases with some experience in federal Indian law and three years in managing and supervising a law office.
- Must submit an acceptable legal writing sample (10-20 pages) at the time of applying for this position.
- Current member in good standing with the Arizona State Bar is required.
- Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.
