JOB SUMMARY
Assist with the development of NIH Database. Conduct field inspections to ensure adequate protection of cultural resources, traditional cultural properties and burials. Attend consultation meetings and field visits on/off Navajo Nation with federal, tribal and municipal governments pertaining to Section 106 undertakings and project development planning. Conduct public outreach presentations about the Navajo Historic Preservation Act, Section 106 process, CRPA and HHPD archaeological process. Promote Navajo concerns with the preservation, recovery and interpretation of its heritage in professional papers, at meetings, seminars and conferences. Skills in evaluating historic properties and archaeological deposits, determining and initiating preservation activities related to historic properties. Skills in applying Navajo traditional culture and beliefs to tribal planning, management and preservation activities. Skills in maintaining detailed and accurate records and preparing reports. Skills in using automated information systems/programs to maintain databases and produce documents for annual review and reports.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • In coordination with the Department Manager, the Supervisory Archaeologist will manage a tribal-wide historic preservation program and assist Navajo Nation chapters, Tribal departments, the general public, neighboring tribes, state, city and federal agencies in Section 106 review of ground-disturbing undertakings on and off Navajo land. Analyze technical cultural resource inventory and ethnographic reports, work plans, programmatic agreements, memorandum of agreements, data recovery reports, historic preservation treatment plans, Archaeological Resources Protection Act damage reports in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, Navajo Nation Cultural Resources Protection Act and its implementing policies and other federal laws and guiding policies. Supervise staff assigned under HHPD Cultural Resources Compliance Section. Advise organizations on the cultural impact of proposed plans, policies and programs. Prepare Cultural Resource Compliance forms, Cultural Resources Inventory Determination forms and correspondences for Section 106 undertakings detailing stipulations. Use current technologies, FileMaker Pro and GIS software and manage archaeological records.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Master’s degree in Anthropology or Archaeology; four years of experience in archeological administration, management and/or research work.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in grant writing and grant management preferred.
  • Experience working in indigenous communities is highly preferred.
