JOB SUMMARY
Knowledge of archaeological principles, methodology, and techniques. Knowledge of NRHP, ARPA regulations and analyzing prehistoric and historic artifacts. Knowledge of Traditional Cultural Places and Geographic Information Systems software.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Archaeologists will conduct cultural resource inventories on BIA NRO Navajo Partitioned Land projects, make evaluations and recommendations for historic properties that have been encountered, identify, document and assess cultural resources and apply to federal and tribal legislations to ensure that cultural resources, including Traditional Cultural Properties and burials, remain undisturbed. Provide technical and professional expertise and guidance to Navajo Nation officials and federal representatives on preservation issues and pertaining to archaeological and historic resources provided by federal and tribal laws. Coordinate and communicate with sponsors and local communities on the impacts of proposed projects. Assist with public outreach activities. Attend department staff meetings.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or Archaeology; one year of experience in archeological survey and excavation activities or an equivalent combination of education and experience
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in grant writing and grant management preferred.
  • Experience working in indigenous communities is highly preferred.
